Leonard Nimoy’s Photographs: a slow paced revision

Broadly known for his role as Mr. Spock in the original Star Trek franchise, Leonard Nimoy wasn’t just a fine actor but also a talented photographer. This visual discipline was one of his strongest passions, if not the strongest; to which he often said preferred over film due to autonomy and control. Nimoy’s photographic work focused on a variety of subjects, including the human body, spirituality and cultural identity. Such themes were explored through a series of photographic projects that revealed his artistic originality, skills and versatility.
His interest in photography began in his teenage years in the early 1940s. He used his family’s Kodak Autographic camera — similar to this one — to capture images of his family and friends. He even set up a modest darkroom in the bathroom of their small Boston apartment. Nimoy continued to pursue photography throughout his life, using film to shoot black and white images that he would hand-print in his functional darkroom. Later, he shifted his focus to digital colour imagery while carefully supervising the printing of his work.
